Starting Another One

I really love these prismatic glass dice. I have several sets and they seem like they could be used to make an infinite number of possible compositions and arrangements. This one is not just a prismatic cut, but also has fancy “star-cut” corners to give it even more facets and surfaces full of colors.

Here’s the initial wipeout as I traditionally like to start paintings. But I’ve been watching Scott Waddell paint on YouTube and I’ve decided to give his technique a bit of a go for the next pass.

Trying really hard to paint thinly and just block in areas of color without losing the drawing underneath at this point. There’s a lot of color work still be be done but I really like this for a first pass at the underpainting layer. Normally I go in pretty opaque with a grisaille of white and burnt umber but I think the thin painting here with some nod towards the local colors of the finished painting is going to work out well.

Things to note, I don’t use OMS or turps to thin my paint, I use lavender spike instead and found it difficult to thin some of these paints uniformly as I think OMS would have. It’s still probably too think and built up in places but I’m also painting on a rougher surface that Scott uses so maybe that was always going to be the case. Really happy with the process so far.
